Winter wheat responses to enhanced efficiency liquid nitrogen fertilizers in the Canadian Prairies

To evaluate how enhanced efficiency liquid nitrogen (N) fertilizers affect winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) production under irrigated and rain-fed environments, experiments were conducted at two five sites across the Canadian Prairies from 2013 to 2018 (22 site-years). The N included urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) treated with i) urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), ii) NBPT plus nitrification dicyandiamide, iii) nitrapyrin (Nitrapyrin), as well untreated UAN urea, polymer-coated (PCU). All applied by banding 50% planting in-crop in early-spring, except PCU, where PCU was early-spring. Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions methane (CH 4 ) uptake measured one site 2014 2017. increased grain yield 1.2%–14% 2.8%–4% respectively, relative all other sources environment. Total between 0% 12% higher than environments. results suggested that both use optimized when contained a inhibitor. produced protein content greater 11%, Nitrapyrin Data three site-years indicated greenhouse gas unaffected source conditions. Liquid may have most potential optimize Prairies.
